Looking out for #1

Quick tip this week but it’s a good one.  I get a lot of calls from people asking me to help them with their job search.  I love it, always fun to help people find new gigs even if it’s not with my current employer (um Google that)......but I worry about something.  I worry that people expect miracles from my advice and for magic job offers to arrive at the end of our conversation.

Um, not likely...

So, here is the tip.  Only you can get your next job.  There is no networking guru or silver bullet that your buddies can shoot and get you a job.  You, and you alone have to find that great gig.  People like me can help, give advice and make connections for you.  But at the end of the day, it’s up to you to look out for #1 and convert those leads into jobs.

Got it?  Great...now get networking and find a great gig

  1. Hey Jeff,

I built something great to get myself into Google but didn't succeed in getting my self noticed so far. If you'd like to look at it and maybe give me a hand here it is :) http://ow.ly/8I7GP

    Thanks.

  2. (Looking out for #2, 3, 4 ...)

I like to think that by looking out for others, eventually some "other" also looks out for me. It has certainly been the case on lots of occasions, but there's no direct correlation. Sometimes the recipients of past help return the favor, but other times, the one helping me is someone to whom I will be forever indebted, because there's nothing I can do but say, "Thank you."

I understand what you are saying though and don't disagree. I always try to explain that, as a recruiter, I try to find good people for open positions. Often people assume recruiters find jobs for individuals, which is (to me) much more difficult.

    1. @eSearch. My point exactly. I LOVE helping people and believe that eventually all the good will comes back around when I need it...but unfortunately all the coaching, networking and intros in the world by a recruiter will only get you in the door....then it's up to you :)

Thanks for the comments, appreciate it

  4. No words for me Jeff? Even "You're not good enough" would give me a direction :)
